Monochromatic Girl.

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” – Marcus Aurelius

When the work week is busy, for me there’s nothing better than enjoying the awaited weekend with a nice brunch. For me, it feels like I’m treating myself to something special. In Windsor, my favourite brunch is served on Saturdays only at Rino’s Kitchen, while I also enjoy the options at Twisted Apron and the classic fare at The Lumberjack. In Detroit it’s fun to explore brunch menus as well. For this day, Brandon and I tried the brunch at Selden Standard, and were not disappointed. We have also really enjoyed the indulgent brunch at Grey Ghost (Sundays only), Gold Cash Gold, and the make your own Bloody Mary or Mimosa at Bobcat Bonnie’s. After our tasty meal at Selden Standard, Brandon and I took in the beautiful weather while wandering the neighbourhood, soaking up the last moments of summer before the fall temperatures fully kick in.

What are your go-to spots for brunch in Windsor and Detroit?

Costa Nova.

“Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” – Wassily Kandinsky

While researching for our trip to Portugal, I came across photographs of quirky and boldly coloured houses that for obvious reasons caught my eye. Located in Costa Nova, an island near the city of Averio near the Atlantic coast, the houses were originally built and painted by local fishermen. Fast forward to today, and many of these houses can be rented as vacation homes. Rather than stay in Costa Nova, Brandon and I stopped for a very brief visit to see in person what I saw so many times online. The houses are so bright and cheery, and are almost candy-like. If my wardrobe could be made into an exterior of a house, this would be it. Though I do love black, I also love being surrounded by so much colour!

Areias do Seixo.

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” – Frank Lloyd Wright

Booking our stay at Areias do Seixo was, for me, a last minute decision. Two months before of our trip (after everything was booked), both Brandon and I decided to rearrange a bit of our itinerary. I thought it would be a fun experience to splurge on one hotel for a single night, and through my research, I came across this gem. Located near Santa Cruz and steps away from the Atlantic Ocean, Areias do Seixo is by far the best place I have ever stayed on vacation. All the reviews I read said it was magical, and there really is no better way to describe it. The scenery, food, room, pool, and hospitality exceeded my expectations. It really felt like a slice of paradise. We even tried extending our stay one more night, but they were (not surprisingly) all booked. From walking through the sand dunes together, to attending a bonfire, and eating a delicious meal, Brandon and I will always remember how special our stay truly was.

Fairy Tale Sintra.

“There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.” – Gilbert K. Chesterton

One of my favourite places to visit while travelling are castles. I love to imagine what it would be like to live in such extravagant places, and with each unique one I see, I continue to be in awe at the meticulous details. Only a 45 minute train ride from Lisbon is the town of Sintra, which is filled with castles, palaces, and mansions. When we arrived to the town, I was shocked it was so cold. Not only that, but as we made our way up the hill to Pena Palace, it was foggy and misting. At first I was a bit disappointed because I was not dressed warm enough, and also because we wouldn’t be able to take pictures of the apparently glorious views due to the fog being so thick. After a few minutes of wandering, this disappointment changed. The misty fog made the palace grounds so much more atmospheric, and made the experience feel almost magical. It was, however, terrifying for me walking the walls of the Castle of the Moors, because we were so high up and there was zero visibility! It was certainly a memorable experience!
