In the Swing of Things.

“To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring.” – George Santayana

The weather lately has been absolutely beautiful. I love the feeling of the sun shining down on my face with a cool breeze brushing my skin. On days like this I am in awe of the changing of seasons. And it’s not just the temperature, but the beauty of the colours. I recently said to my husband, as silly as it may sound, but in autumn, death never looked so beautiful (I’m referencing the dying leaves of course). I like to think of autumn as a time for reflection. It doesn’t necessarily have the optimism of the rebirth of spring, but it’s like the calm before the storm.

For my outfit, I paired my new favourite jacket with a swing dress I bought last year. What I like about this particular dress is that it’s lined underneath, which keeps me extra warm in cooler temperatures. This bag has also been a favourite of mine for several years because not only does it hold quite a bit, but can be worn cross body.

Sweet November.

“Beauty is the only thing that time cannot harm. Philosophies fall away like sand, creeds follow one another, but what is beautiful is a joy for all seasons, a possession for all eternity.” – Oscar Wilde

My favourite style of dress is the fit and flare. I find that it is the most flattering of fits, as well as the most feminine. Though it’s relatively easy to find fit and flare dresses in the summer, it’s rather difficult in the fall and winter. When I do find one with long sleeves it has to fit me perfectly in the torso or else it will lead to difficult alterations. Being petite and short waisted, I have to pass on so many beautiful dresses I try on because they are just too long in the waist. Besides finding a good seamstress, which I have, I’ve been purchasing dresses sold from Asian retailers lately because they fit my frame so well. Though I was skeptical at first, purchases I’ve made from Dezzal and AliExpress have all been successful. I’ve certainly come to appreciate and trust customer reviews and accurate measurements when ordering from such sites. Plus the clothes are really quirky and unique!

Saving Face.

“Today I see beauty everywhere I go, in every face I see, in every single soul.” –  Kevyn Aucoin

20161117-dscf8798

When people tell me I have beautiful skin, I often I find that I’m shocked rather than flattered. The reason for my reaction is because I have struggled with acne for years, and only lately has my complexion been the best I’ve seen it in years. So, yes, even in your thirties you get pimples. I thought I was supposed to start wanting to prevent wrinkles at this age, not trying every way possible to zap zits! In addition to taking an oral prescription for my acne, it’s important that I take care of my face daily to avoid any flare ups, and of course, to keep my skin looking healthy.

I start every morning by washing my face with Spectragel, then moisturizing with Estee Lauder’s DayWear. On special occasions I also use Estee Lauder’s Idealist serum to make my skin tone appear more even. If my skin is feeling really dry and flaky I use Cetaphil and it works like a charm to combat crusty skin, especially in blemish areas. At the end of the day, I remove my makeup with Aveeno cleansing wipes and Marcelle eye makeup remover pads. For the odd pimple, I prefer Clean and Clear, if I’m not already using a prescription topical cream.

Bombs Away

“Designers want me to dress like Spring, in billowing things. I don’t feel like Spring. I feel like a warm red Autumn.” – Marilyn Monroe

I’m loving the new bomber jacket trend, and I chose the particular one I’m wearing because it isn’t as voluminous as other ones I have seen in stores, and it also give off a “varsity” vibe. What I also like about these jackets is that they pretty much go with anything, and are great in fall weather. Being 5’1″, cropped jackets also tend to look more flattering.

I’ve had this dress in my closet since August and have been waiting for the cooler weather to wear it. I was attracted to it for its unique details and colour. I just can’t resist dresses with ruffles, bows, and flowers!

Magic’s in the Makeup

“The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural.” – Calvin Klein

20161103-_dsc7613

I love makeup. I like buying it, I like wearing it, I like looking at how other people wear it. I starting wearing makeup around grade eleven, first experimenting with eyeshadow and lipstick. Now, several years later, I honestly feel more myself when I have makeup on. I don’t believe that makeup hides one’s true beauty, but enhances it. Makeup is a way to express myself, just like my clothing and accessories.

My favourite makeup brand is MAC. I find that their lipstick has staying power and their eyeshadows are pigmented and blend well. My CoverGirl compact is my best friend when it comes to concealer, but first I like to use a lighter foundation in the form of a BB cream. NARS blush in Orgasm has also been a go-to item for me for years; it’s pink/peach colour works well with my pale complexion. When it comes to eyeliner, I strongly prefer liquid, especially with a felt tip applicator. I have tried many mascaras, and lately I’ve been pleased with Dior. My previous favourite was benefit’s They’re Real, but I found that it dried out way too fast. Urban Decay also offers some really good products. I never apply eyeshadow without their primer, or spend a whole day out in the sweaty heat without their setting spray. As for tools, I have no complaints about Sephora and MAC brushes. My favourite lip gloss is made by YSL, and the reason I like it so much is because it’s not too sticky and the application brush makes it easy to apply.

What are your favourite makeup products?

Philosophy

On Theatre.

“Unless the theatre can ennoble you, make you a better person, you should flee from it.” – Constantin Stanislavski

In his 1897 essay, novelist Leo Tolstoy begged the question, What is Art? Tolstoy believed that art was a human necessity, a form of communication between people. Theatre, as an art form, can be easily seen as through Tolstoy’s view. I cannot remember a particular moment in which I first became interested in the dramatic arts. Maybe it was watching television and movies, and being in awe of the celebrity actors, or watching my sister perform in school plays. Either way, I was captivated by the performing arts at a young age. I even pursued drama in university by completing my honours degree in Drama in Education and Community.

For me, drama has the power to open doors. It allows the performer to express themselves through characters that may either be similar or different than who they are in reality. Drama builds confidence, enhances communication skills, and can push you outside of your comfort zone. Furthermore, drama helps you to express yourself better and encourages creativity and imagination. For the audience, theatre has the potential to be more than just entertainment or watching a story come to life. For example, Anton Chekhov’s plays greatly impacted Russian society. In The Seagull, society was reflected through the themes of fate and art, while Uncle Vanya revolved around beauty and destruction, drunkenness and alcohol, and how Russian lives had become wasted, and were basically trapped in their existences. Such examples demonstrate the cathartic nature of theatre. Drama forms connections, stirs emotions, and often gives way to critical thinking.

For the month of November, I have been given the privilege to participate in community theatre by performing in The God of Ecstasy, an adaptation of Euripides’s The Bacchae. It has been years since I have been on the stage, so this experience reenergized my passion for acting. It has also pushed me to do things I am generally uncomfortable doing such as dancing and singing. I have met so many incredible people who are not only talented, but caring, compassionate, and hard working. Together, with our director and crew, we have the chance to tell a powerful story of ritual, reverence, and being true to yourself. And that, in essence, is the power of theatre.
