The Petite Philosopher

Thoughtful Style.

New York, New York

“One belongs to New York instantly. One belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.” – Thomas Wolfe

When my husband and I were thinking of where to go for March break, we first thought of Los Angeles because neither of us had been there. However, after further research, we decided to choose somewhere closer to maximize our time. Both of us had been to New York City before and loved it, and thought it would be a great idea to see the Big Apple once again, especially because the flight time from Detroit is less than two hours. We knew it would be sort of a gamble in terms of the weather, but we did not expect it to be as cold and snowy as it ended up being. With that said, we made the most of our trip and made many incredible memories. Because it wasn’t our first time to NYC, we didn’t do too much tourist sightseeing.

We stayed at the HGU New York. The lobby and room were both modern and stylish. The bed was comfortable, and we had a nice bay window. The bathroom was clean and spacious, though I would have liked the water to be hotter than it was, especially since it was so cold outside.

We spent most of our days wandering Midtown Manhattan, in addition to checking out the Museum of Modern Art, seeing The Glass Menagerie on Broadway and a comedy show at the Comedy Cellar (with a surprise appearance from Louis C.K.). One of my favourite highlights would have to be ice skating with my love at Rockefeller Centre. Though it was a very cold week, and I didn’t have many fashion options other than to keep warm, New York City is always a delight!

French Press.

“Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide.” – Napoleon Bonaparte

I love all things French, and tend to gravitate towards accessories with motifs representing my favourite place in Europe. My handbag was purchased on our honeymoon to Paris at the famous Gallery Lafayette. I remember the handbag department to be the most chaotic scene, with some women literally throwing purses and buying them like they were candy. It is known the handbag are less expensive in Europe because of exchange rate and you receive the VAT (taxes) back, so I’m assuming these women were desperate to get their deals. I liked this particular bag because it would forever remind me of our honeymoon. I enjoy purchasing clothing and accessory items not just for their style, but for the memories and sentimental value they will hold.

My husband is aware of my love of not just France, but history as well, and gifted me this Napoleon scarf for Christmas. I paired it with a fitted pencil dress that makes me feel confident due to the dedication I have put forth in my fitness routine. I felt that this was the perfect outfit for a beautiful day taking in the art and culture of the Detroit Institute of Arts. We are so fortunate to be in close proximity to such a wonderful museum, and I highly recommend a visit if you’re in the Detroit area.

Beauty

Nailed it.

“Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.” – Carl Jung

Up until two years ago, the only times I ever got a manicure were for my best friend’s wedding I was standing up in and my own wedding. Fast forward to now, I get my nails done every two to three weeks. I have a nasty habit of picking the skin around my fingers (I know it’s gross) and found that getting manicures stopped me from picking because I never wanted to ruin the nails I paid for. Not only that, but I feel like getting my nails done is a nice treat for myself where I can relax and be pampered. I have never had acrylic nails, and continuously opt to have my natural nails painted using “shellac” gel polish, which lasts for around two weeks. My nails have never felt brittle or weak, which I know some people can be concerned about.

My favourite nail salon in Windsor is Lux-Tique Nail Boutique, which I have been going to for about two years now. The salon is clean and hygienic, and the staff is always so welcoming and nice. They have an awesome selection of colours, and the technicians are very talented and up to speed with the latest nail trends.

For my most recent nail appointment I decided to try something other than my typical red or pink and opted for the new chrome trend. This process takes a little longer than the regular gel, but the end result looks really unique and futuristic.

If you’re hunting for a great nail salon, I really recommend Lux-Tique!

Blue Velvet.

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” – Maya Angelou

Velvet? Check. Pom Poms? Check. Embroidery? Check. Can this dress have any more cute details? I’m not that sure! I wrote in a post back in November that I’ve been trying out Chinese online retails with success. Lately I have found that Ali Express has some really interesting pieces if you’re willing to take the time to search. This dress was one of those finds, and just screams “whimsical”. I paired it with navy suede pumps from Le Chateau and one of my new favourite handbags. Usually I would avoid dressing in all the same colour (except for black), but I think navy blue works. I even remember a friend telling me not too long ago that navy is the new black, and I think I agree with her. To me, navy blue is black, but colourful (if that makes any sense; believe me, it does in my head).

What colours are you loving this season? Be sure to comment below!

Weekend in Toronto.

“The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.” – Gilbert K. Chesterton

This past weekend my husband and I went on a mini getaway to a favourite city of ours – Toronto. Only 4 hours from Windsor, Toronto is a great city with fabulous shopping, food, and entertainment. When staying in Toronto, we favour The Drake Hotel for its quirky hipster rooms and all-around vibe, as well as its location on Queen St. W. To be honest, my husband and I don’t venture out of this area too much, especially if we only have a couple days in the city. Both Queen St. W. and nearby Ossington St. offer some really interesting independent shops and plenty of good eats.

Outside of The Drake. In addition to its convenient location, the hotel has a great restaurant and bar.

Inside our room. This is the crash pad, and it’s a great size for the two of us. Warning – be aware that the shower is fully exposed, so I wouldn’t recommend staying in this room if you don’t want to see the person you are with naked.

Nedage  780 Queen St W, Toronto. Amazing french pastries and macarons – YUM!

Dinner at Pizzeria Libretto. 221 Ossington Ave.

Drinks at Otto’s Bierhalle. 1089 Queen St W.

Lunch at La Palette.  492 Queen St W.

Dinner at Pai. 18 Duncan St.

In addition to where to stay and eat, here are my shopping recommendations:

Where to shop on Ossington: Victoire, Rotate This, Crywolf.

Where to shop on Queen West: Gravity Pope, Pearls and Pockets, Morba, Get Outside, Zane, Outer Layer, Coal Miner’s Daughter, The Drake General Store, Philistine, Fraiche.

Grape Crush.

“Every act of rebellion expresses a nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being.” – Albert Camus

Oh, coat woes…where do I begin? It has become the ultimate first world problem; after losing some weight it has been what feels like an impossible task – to find a coat that fits. Being petite, it’s already difficult to find coats that are perfectly proportioned, so having a good seamstress is a must. Last year my parents gifted me a beautiful Alice + Olivia coat for my 30th birthday, but unfortunately it is now too large to wear without major alterations (which completely breaks my heart). Though not heavy enough to be my official winter coat, I snagged this coat from Zara for a great price, but it still had to be taken in a bit. I love the sleeves, and think it adds a romantic twist, though my husband says it reminds him of a pirate. Underneath, I channelled the 1990s with a crushed velvet dress and a choker, pairing them with my go-to tote and my new favourite pumps. Even though it might be too late for me to find that perfect winter coat, I’ll still be on the look out, or at least just look forward to the warmer weather!

Philosophy

All you need is love.

“One word frees us
Of all the weight and pain in life,
That word is Love.”
– Socrates

In a world where too many people only see darkness, today let us be reminded of the light. There is so much beauty in this world, and love will always conquer hate.

Happy Valentine’s Day, and remember, love is all you need.

Love, Vanessa xoxoxo
